Growing up in the 80s, I remember the excitement of watching my Dad set up the film projector while my Mom popped the popcorn in the kitchen. My siblings and I would spread out our sleeping bags on the living room floor and we'd watch old family movies of us taking our first steps or being silly in the backyard. If we were lucky, the projector rolled on smoothly and we had a good viewing experience. But I also have core memories of the projector malfunctioning. Whether it was the projector bulb burning out or the film itself getting stuck, it seems it was always something.Â
As technology advanced, we had our film reels transferred to VHS or DVD and thought our problems were solved. But decades later, VHS and DVD players became outdated. Even if we have those items transferred into digital format, we're stuck watching them on our tiny phones and tablets. Only those tech-savvy enough to cast their phones to the TV are able to view their memories on a big screen -- sorry Grandma!
